Test Drive Review: 2024 Subaru Solterra vs. Crosstrek

Having recently test-driven two 2024 Subaru models, here’s my comparison of Subaru’s futuristic all-electric Solterra to the redesigned Crosstrek. While the Subaru Solterra boasts a more futuristic design that reflects its all-electric nature, the Crosstrek maintains Subaru's signature rugged styling. Launched last year, the Solterra offers a slightly larger footprint than the Crosstrek, providing more interior space for passengers and cargo. While the Solterra EV shares a platform with the Toyota bZ4X, it has Subaru’s advanced all-wheel drive and rugged performance.

Models/Price: Both models offer multiple trim levels that cater to various preferences and budgets. The new 2024 Crosstrek is an affordable SUV eager to take on off-road adventures.  It offers five trim levels with a lower price point for the Base model ($26,540). Other models include the Premium ($27,440), Sport ($30,290), Limited ($32,190), and Wilderness ($33,290). The all-electric Solterra offers three trim levels, including the Solterra Premium ($46,340), Limited ($49,840), and the high-end Touring ($54,340). Power/Performance: Redesigned for 2024, the Crosstrek engine options are unchanged from 2023. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 152 horsepower, and the optional 2.5-liter four-cylinder generates 182 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard, and all versions of the Crosstrek now rely on a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). For 2024, the manual transmission was dropped. Performance-wise, the Crosstrek balances efficiency and performance. Its symmetrical all-wheel-drive system excels in off-road adventures and extreme weather conditions. It has 8.7 inches of ground clearance and comes with hill-descent control and hill-start assist features. The Wilderness trim offers 9.3 inches of ground clearance with more aggressive all-terrain tires. The Solterra combines all-wheel drive and electric motors to deliver instant torque and impressive traction on various road surfaces. Its two electric motors generate a combined 215 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque. The advanced transmission operates in Eco, Normal, Power, and X-mode modes. It directs power to each wheel, depending on the road conditions. Another feature includes "Grip Control," a low-speed cruise control. The paddles on the steering wheel also allow the regenerative braking force to be adjusted. Features/Technology: Solterra's cutting-edge EV technology includes an intuitive infotainment system designed for EVs. The Crosstrek offers many features, such as a touchscreen infotainment system, smartphone integration, and amenities like heated seats and a panoramic sunroof. Fuel Economy/MPGe: The 72.8 kWh battery in the Solterra Premium has an EPA rating of 104 MPGe and an estimated range of 227 miles, while the Limited and Touring trims are rated at 222 miles. The Solterra's onboard 6.6-kW charger can recharge the battery in nine hours on a Level 2 Charger and about 35 minutes on a 100-kW DC fast charger. Depending on the engine, the Crosstrek averages between 28 to 36 city/34 highway mpg, according to the EPA.
