2026 Lexus TX 550h+ PHEV, Luxury and Practicality

After a week behind the wheel of the 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ PHEV, I came away with the impression that Lexus has figured out how to combine traditional luxury with performance and three-row usefulness through plug-in hybrid technology.

The TX 550h is not a fully electric vehicle, nor does it drive like a typical gasoline SUV. Instead, this plug-in hybrid combines a 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine, electric motors, a lithium-ion battery, and all-wheel drive to deliver 404 horsepower. More importantly, it integrates all that technology without disrupting the driving experience.

There were no engine vibrations or sounds as I pulled away from a stop in electric mode. As I pressed harder on the accelerator, the electric motors delivered immediate torque before the engine engaged. The switch between electric and gasoline power is usually so seamless that I found myself paying less attention to what was powering the SUV and more to how smoothly it drove.

That's exactly how hybrid technology should work.

Power/Performance

The TX 550h+ is a powerful three-row SUV. Its naturally aspirated 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine works with the plug-in hybrid system to produce a combined 404 horsepower. Unlike some rivals that use smaller turbocharged four-cylinder engines, the Lexus maintains the smoothness of a V6 while using electric power to boost both performance and efficiency.

I appreciated the smooth power on the highway, especially when merging lanes and passing. It responded quickly without feeling strained. Electric torque gave an immediate push, followed by the more powerful pull of the gasoline engine.

Independent testing confirms that impression. Car and Driver recorded a 5.2-second zero-to-60 mph run, which is impressive considering the TX 550h+ weighs over 5,000 pounds.

Lexus' DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system also continuously adjusted power between the front and rear wheels, which helped deliver confident control on exit ramps.

Regenerative Braking

The enhanced regenerative braking demonstrated Lexus's deep hybrid knowledge. When slowing down, the electric motors act as generators, capturing energy that would otherwise be lost during conventional braking and returning it to the battery.

In many hybrids, you can feel the regenerative braking working as you slow down, constantly reminding you that you are driving a hybrid, but Lexus has made it imperceptible.

Electric & Gas

The plug-in feature is what sets the 550h+ apart from other TX models. Lexus estimates about 33 miles of electric driving range on a full charge. This could enable many owners to complete their daily commute, school run, or neighborhood errands without using gasoline.

Using a 240-volt Level 2 charger, Lexus states the battery can be fully charged in about three hours under ideal conditions.

Exterior/Interior

Although it’s a mid-size SUV, the exterior doesn't appear as large. The design is smoothly integrated into the body rather than relying on the massive grille seen on some earlier Lexus models. Slim lighting and standard 22-inch wheels give the 550h+ a more contemporary look.

Inside the cabin, the semi-aniline leather upholstery and Blackwood trim highlight its premium status within the TX lineup.

The second-row captain's chairs seat six and provide easier access to the third row. Lexus focused on maximizing passenger and cargo space from the beginning. The Panorama Glass Roof is also standard on the 550h+ Luxury.

Technology

The TX features a 14-inch Lexus touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, and seven USB ports address one of the realities of owning a three-row family vehicle, where everyone brings a device.

Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 is also standard, offering adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, pedestrian detection, Road Sign Assist, and other driver-assistance features.

Models/Price

The 2026 TX lineup includes the gasoline-powered TX 350 starting at around $58,690 MSRP, the performance-oriented TX 500h hybrid beginning at $72,010, and the top-of-the-line TX 550h+ Luxury AWD, which I tested, is priced at $81,060 before options.
