2026 Toyota bZ XLE Gets Serious About Electric Vehicles

After spending a week behind the wheel of the 2026 Toyota bZ XLE (formerly the bZ4X), it became clear that Toyota dedicated significant time to improving the EV’s range, charging speed, and overall performance. The upgraded bZ has been transformed into a competitive EV that addresses the issues from the previous model. Although many still refer to it as the bZ4X, Toyota has started shortening the name to bZ.

Exterior/Interior Design

During my week of driving around Washington, D.C., the bZ attracted attention without the futuristic appearance of other EVs. The redesigned exterior features a front fascia with sleeker LED headlights, giving it a more upscale look. 

Toyota also improved the interior with a cleaner dashboard, a large 14-inch touchscreen in the center with sharp graphics, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloud-based navigation, and a faster, more intuitive experience. It also restored physical controls for key climate functions, which many drivers will prefer over navigating digital menus.

Performance

Thanks to improved electric motors, the all-wheel-drive models' horsepower increases from 215 to 338 compared to last year’s model. The 2026 Toyota bZ XLE offers multiple versions ranging from 168 to 338 horsepower, depending on the drivetrain and battery setup. The XLE Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) has 168 horsepower; XLE FWD Plus offers 221 horsepower; and the XLE All-Wheel Drive has 338 horsepower.  

The bZ delivers instant torque from a stop. Its acceleration feels smooth rather than aggressive, perfectly aligning with Toyota's goal of comfortable everyday driving. Starting from traffic lights is quick, and merging onto Interstate 495 is easy thanks to the electric motor's instant response.

Ride and Handling

The ride quality was clear, as Toyota tuned the suspension for comfort rather than sporty handling. The independent suspension smoothly absorbed potholes on city streets throughout the Washington metro area. The steering was light but precise, making parking lots and urban traffic easy to navigate. Cabin noise was also minimized, allowing conversations without raising your voice even at highway speeds.

The low-mounted battery pack lowers the center of gravity, reducing body roll compared to many gasoline-powered compact SUVs. The bZ rewards smooth driving with impressive stability and confidence.

Driving Range

The front-wheel-drive XLE with Toyota's larger battery now provides up to an EPA-estimated 314 miles of driving range, a notable upgrade from earlier versions that reached about 252 miles. 

During my week-long test, which involved commuting, running errands, and highway driving, I found the projected range to be accurate under typical conditions. Like all EVs, aggressive acceleration, high-speed interstate driving, and extreme temperatures decrease efficiency, but the bZ now rivals the top mainstream electric crossovers. 

Along with numerous performance and range enhancements, bZ drivers can now access a broader network of DC fast chargers, including the Tesla Supercharger Network, new Plug & Charge feature, and smart Apple Maps EV routing.

Charging Performance

The time it takes to recharge the battery has also improved. Charging efficiency has significantly increased. Toyota estimates that charging from 10% to 80% now takes about 30 minutes with a DC Fast Charger. For overnight charging, it now takes approximately seven hours using the new 11-kW onboard Level 2 charger. Toyota has also been working on improving battery longevity. It projects that its batteries will retain about 90% of their original capacity after ten years of normal use.

Competition

Although the bZ faces tough competition in the EV crossover segment from Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Honda Prologue, and Subaru Solterra, it remains my top choice for style and comfort.
