The all-new 2025 Volkswagen ID Buzz is more than just an electric minivan—it’s a cultural reset. Inspired by the beloved VW Microbus of the 1960s and '70s, the ID Buzz blends nostalgic charm with cutting-edge EV technology. After years of anticipation, dating back to its 2017 concept debut, VW has finally delivered a modern, all-electric successor that honors its heritage while moving into the future.
While the later Eurovan (1993-2003) briefly filled the gap, the ID Buzz marks the revival of VW’s iconic people-mover, now packed with innovation. I recently spent time with the Pro S Plus trim, and it left a strong impression with its retro-futuristic styling, spacious cabin, and smooth driving dynamics.
Power & Performance: The ID Buzz Pro S Plus I tested came with a single-motor RWD setup, producing 282 horsepower, enough for confident acceleration and effortless highway merging. The 86.0-kWh battery delivered an EPA-estimated 235 miles of range, which is decent but not class-leading. Competitors include other three-row electric SUVs and vans.
Driving Impressions:
Silent & Refined: The electric powertrain is whisper-quiet, with minimal road noise, making it an excellent long-haul cruiser.
Comfort-Oriented Suspension: The ride is plush, soaking up bumps with ease, though it leans a bit in sharp turns, typical for a tall minivan.
One-Pedal Driving: Regenerative braking is firm but smooth, allowing for relaxed driving in traffic.
Charging Speed: A DC fast charger can replenish the battery in about 30 minutes, though the range could be better for long road trips.
The AWD version (335 hp) would offer more punch, but the RWD model felt well-balanced for daily driving.
Design/Style: The design of the ID Buzz is the most significant standout feature. My test model came in Polemo Yellow and Candy White two-tone paint with a Copper tone interior—a bold, cheerful combo that turned heads everywhere.
Key Styling Highlights:
Retro-Modern Aesthetic: The boxy shape, short front overhang, and VW’s signature round LED headlights pay direct homage to the original Microbus.
Spacious Cabin: The three-row layout comfortably seats seven to eight passengers, with ample headroom and clever storage solutions.
High-Quality Materials: Soft-touch surfaces, sustainable fabrics, and playful color accents give it a premium yet fun vibe.
Features/Tech: The Pro S Plus trim ($65,045) is loaded with upscale features:
13-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system – Crisp, immersive audio.
Heated & ventilated front seats with massage function – A luxurious touch for long drives.
Head-up display & 360-degree camera – Makes parking this big van surprisingly easy.
Power sliding doors & retractable tow hitch – Adds convenience for families and adventurers.
Safety Tech: Volkswagen’s IQ. Drive suite includes:
Adaptive Cruise Control
Lane-Keep Assist
Front Assist (automatic emergency braking)
Active Side Assist (blind-spot monitoring)
Fuel Economy (MPGe) / Pricing:
RWD Model: 90 MPGe city / 75 MPGe highway
AWD Model: 87 MPGe city / 74 MPGe highway
Pricing:
Pro S (RWD): $61,545
Pro S Plus (RWD): $65,045
1st Edition (AWD): $68,040
The 2025 VW ID Buzz Pro S Plus is not just another minivan. It is a statement in retro styling, spacious interior, and safe driving, which makes it ideal for large families that want an eco-friendly, fun-to-drive vehicle with plenty of passenger room. While the range could be better, its charm, tech, and performance make up for it.
