Mitsubishi's commitment to enhancing the electric range and performance of its Outlander Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PHEV), the World's first plug-in electric SUV, continues into the 2024 model year. With a focus on innovation and refinement, the latest iteration of this pioneering vehicle features a new-generation PHEV system, building upon the advancements of previous models. Since its introduction in 2013, the Outlander PHEV has solidified its position as the world's top-selling plug-in hybrid SUV, with global sales surpassing 300,000 units. While most sales occur in Europe, its popularity underscores its widespread acclaim and appeal. Powertrain/Performance: The 2024 Outlander PHEV is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, delivering a combined 248 horsepower, which boosts performance, particularly in urban driving scenarios. The electric motors drive the wheels and help produce 332 pound-feet of torque. Moreover, the lithium-ion battery pack's capacity has been increased to 20.0 kilowatt-hours, providing an estimated EV range of up to 38 miles—a substantial improvement over its predecessor. Trim Levels/Pricing: Mitsubishi offers multiple trim levels for the 2024 Outlander PHEV, catering to various preferences and budgets. Depending on the chosen trim and optional features, prices start from around $35,000 for the base model and extend to $45,000 or more for higher-end configurations. During a weeklong test drive in the 2024 Outlander PHEV, it demonstrated its prowess in urban driving conditions, particularly in electric-only mode. Furthermore, its robust yet quiet performance produced a smooth and comfortable ride, complemented by features such as Bridgestone BLIZZAK winter tires for enhanced traction in adverse weather conditions. Design/Interior Features: The 2024 model also has modern design elements and improved interior quality, including better-quality accents and surfaces. Noteworthy features include an available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a head-up display. The three-row model has expanded legroom for passengers in the first two rows, while the third row is ideal for accommodating children. It also has more cargo space than the previous generation. Fuel Efficiency/MPGe: According to EPA ratings, the Outlander PHEV achieves 25 mpg city and 27 mpg highway running on gasoline and 64 MPGe in the electric mode. This fuel efficiency and electric capabilities underscore Mitsubishi's commitment to eco-friendly driving.
